What Steps to Take if Your Key is Stuck in the Ignition
- Car key stuck? First things first – make sure it is truly actually stuck. You might just not be turning the wheel in the right direction. Pull gently on the key so it doesn’t break. It could just be that the steering wheel isn’t in the proper position, which of course is a simple problem to fix.
- Is the engine actually off? In some cases, you might still have it running.
- Did the key break in half? If so, it is partially trapped in the ignition cylinder. This would entail the need for ignition cylinder replacement or possibly broken key extraction. A locksmith would be able to determine the best course of action.
- Is there debris or something otherwise clogging the ignition cylinder? It happens!
